Francine did as he asked and for the next half an hour listened to his enthusiastic ramblings about drawing rooms, cosy parlours, breakfast kitchens and scullery, grand bedroom suites, and extensive grounds.
She began to warm to the idea of a breakfast kitchen with a butler sink, huge range, solid oak table and hanging copper pots and pans. In her mind she saw a ghostly figure up to her elbows in pastry, game and home-made jam. It could have been her in a past life.
‘You’re smiling, so you can imagine it too, can’t you!’
She opened her eyes and had to admit the mist was lifting in more ways than one.
