Sunday Photo Fiction – Sept 2, 2018

Joy Pixley has provided our photo for the prompt this week.

‘Excuse me? I appear to be lost.’
‘Where ya headin?’
‘Copper Ranch. It belongs to my Uncle.’
‘Old Man Riley?’
‘John Riley, yes.’
‘I’ll tell you a short cut!’

‘Turn right onto the dirt road, then after about ten miles you’ll see the beckoning tree.’
‘What’s a beckoning tree?’ he’d asked.
‘It’s the only one tall enough to see from a distance and it’ll point you in the right direction. You drive safe now, y’hear?’

So in the middle of nowhere, Joe found the tall tree.
He got out of his vehicle and looked in the direction its limbs were pointing.
He could just make out a property in the distance and headed that way.

His uncle greeted him at the door.
‘Why’d ya come that way Joe?’
‘I got lost and a guy in town told me a short cut.’
‘Skinny crosseyed fella with a hook nose and a limp?’
‘Yeah. That’s him.’
John Riley burst out laughing.
‘That’s Pete. Always had a sense of humour. If you’d just followed the road through to the other side of town and kept driving, you would’ve come in behind the ranch. I’ll have a word next time I see him. Coffee?’

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have recently lost our beloved dog Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney, and now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of my GSD so had hers done too. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

Loved the snippets of conversation, and your use of the prompt. Very nicely done.

  2. I love this . It put a big smile on my face!

  3. Joy Pixley says:

Ha ha, good one! Seems like the smaller the town, the more likely you are to get directions from *that* guy, the one with the odd sense of humor!

  4. Funny story. I have to say I like the sound of a “beckoning tree” even if this one wasn’t particularly helpful.

  5. Susan says:

Enjoyable story, Pensitivity. There is always a jokester in every group.
