Tale Weaver #185 – Phobias

This week Michael asks us to write about a phobia. It could be real or made up, the decision is ours.

I don’t know about phobias, but I’m certainly getting paranoid.
Hubby and I like to keep our house and ourselves clean. We don’t mind getting dirty, but don’t like to stay dirty, and neither of us can abide a dirty home, especially bathrooms, loos and kitchens.
That’s all been turned on it head with recent events, though we thought we were getting on top of it.

The dog scratches, I pounce, raking through her fur checking for bugs, living or dead.
I see a black speck and pounce, prod it with my finger to see if it moves, then get out the magnifying glass.
The vet combed through where she’d been scratching placing a tissue underneath, then put it in the sink to wet it slightly.
When the black specks started to stream brown / red, it confirmed flea or mite poo, so I’ve got in extra kitchen roll, but need to get a new doggie comb, amongst other things.

Medicated and flea shampoos, check.
Spot on Stronghold purchased, first application done and five more months supply.
Household and fabric spray, check.
Flea foggers: check, twin pack, times three.

We see something out of the corner of our eye, and pounce.
Could be a fly, or bitey thing, but we’re taking no chances. Out with the spray killer.
We go out shopping and puff the carpets with permethrin or diatomaceous earth.
Washing is being done on a hot and long setting, pet bedding also washed on a hot wash separately.  Up goes our electricity bill.
We hoover every day, right into the corners, moving the furniture out of the way.
One of us has an itch……. the other inspects, pokes and prods. OTC remedies for bites, stings, and insect repellant purchased and applied.

Financial count to date, including vet fees but not sofa alternative which is still to come, around £250.

My fear is of parasitic home invasion, aka “Itsnotherfaultphobia”, “Neveragainphobia” and “Whathavewedonetodeservethisphobia”.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have recently lost our beloved dog Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney, and now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of my GSD so had hers done too. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

I had visions of you both in pith helmets ever watchful, spray can at the ready, vacuum on standby, waiting and watching while Maggie has a good doggy scratch….that’s for sharing your phobias with us.

Turns out it was all only a skin irritation . . .
