This is my contribution to Sue Vincent’s challenge this week:
‘I’m cold and afraid.’
‘Don’t worry, my darling. I’ll look after you. They won’t find us.’
‘Are you sure? It seems we’ve been running for days.’
‘I know, my love. But we’ll be safe soon, I promise.’
‘I’m tired. Can’t we rest for a while?’
‘Just a little further. You see that ridge up there under the trees? We’ll be able to see if anyone’s coming.’
The pair stumbled to the top, and fell to their knees, totally exhausted.
He put his arm around her.
‘I’ve been saving this,’ he said. ‘Come, drink. Everything will be alright now.’
The two shared what was in his flask.
‘Sleep now. Rest your head on my shoulder, and close your eyes.’
Feeling drowsy, she did as he bid.
He prayed that the potion he had been given would quickly take effect as they slept.
The Stones were referred to as Sentinels of the Valley.
Legend had it a Prince and his Princess had escaped certain death from invading forces by taking a potion which turned them to stone the moment they fell asleep. The Prince had selected this particular spot for their final resting place as they could see for miles, but were hidden by the trees from those that approached.
I didn’t expect that final twist. Lovely story, Di.
Thanks Sue. When I saw the prompt, it looked like two figures resting against each other. I let my imagination do the rest.
There are definitely figures, or at least faces, in these stones 😉
Aha! 🙂
😀
Do they ever get to wake up?
Sadly no, but at least they are together and they’re safe.
Sure, barring weather erosion or some guy with a jackhammer.
ha!
This is beautiful and sad too. 💜💜
Thanks Willow.

I love the legend behind the picture. Nicely done.
Thanks Iain. Glad you liked my tale.
What a great story, that’s what you call true love.
Thank you. 🙂
Where’s your dynamite? 😛

The makings of an extended story Di?
Doubtful I’m afraid Michael.
Yes I know that feeling.
A beautiful story, P101. Love the way you have seamlessly tied the ending to the photo.
Thank you so much for your kind comment.
