When I worked for the vending machine company, a popular item in the cake line was a Russian Slice. Should any be returned from site, I and other members of the office staff were allowed to take them home, as we were cornish pasties, sausage rolls, rolls and sandwiches, which was good for subsidizing my household budget and filling sandwich boxes.
It was never the same twice, mainly because basically it was made using all the odds and ends of other cakes, layered together with jam and topped with fondant icing.
As such, it was perfect for worshipping your sweet tooth.
These are google images of various Russian Slices.
There is a bakers in Skegness that not only make your sandwiches fresh to order for around Β£2, but also sell the most divine pasties, pies and cakes.
They are a little on the expensive side, but it is good quality and IMO value for money.
Hubby made a beeline for them today knowing they sell Russian Slabs as opposed to slices and he fancied one. They are the only bakers we have come across that sell it.
We could easily scoff it in one day, but for the price, I am making it last at least two.
I know this isn’t good for the diet, but is probably better than an Easter Egg!
I never heard of a Russian slice before but it sounds like a great way to get rid of cakes that fell apart.
I have no idea how they do it, but I suppose they mix it together, mix in the jam and then compress it before adding the icing. There are recipes on google. My failures in the cake line were either frisbee cakes (sponges that didn’t rise) or a Di surprise served with custard.
Oh Yummy. I’ve not heard of Russian slices before – Now I want cake! π
PS I know this is nothing to do with your post – but it is raining here – right now! We got a thunderstorm out of the blue. π
Hurrah! Hope the rain lasts for you!
Thank you – more headed our way today – I hope. π
Hope so!
