Daily Prompt: premonition

Good word prompt this morning:

I had a dream last night about a guy called Joe Latimer who kept buying me dresses.
Two things to note: I don’t know a Joe, Latimer or otherwise, and I don’t wear dresses, let alone allow anyone to buy them for me.
Here’s the thing though: Hubby knew a guy called Latimer, but only ever by that, not his first name, way before we met. What a coincidence, but hardly a premonition.

I read once that everyone has a sense of ESP to an extent but most of us tend to quash and ignore it rather than explore and develop it.
I think we have all had feelings at one time or another of having been somewhere before when we know we haven’t, know someone on sight yet have never met, and feel bad vibes about certain places .

As a teenager I went through the usual knowing who was on the end of the phone before answering way before the days of call ID, and knowing my way around strange towns.
Hubby trusts my instincts though, and if I say I don’t want to go in a particular direction on a drive or a walk, usually we don’t go that way. Once if we had, we would have been caught up in a severe traffic jam following an accident that hadn’t hit the news yet.
Nothing worse than a traffic report of road delays coming across on the radio and you have a first hand view as you’re right in the thick of it.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have an elderly dog called Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

Premonition is an interesting topic. I read an article a long time ago which offered an explanation.

Re knowing who is calling before you answer the phone: Given the number of people who regularly use a given phone, if you guessed every time it rang, there would be isolated cases when you would be right. The main point however, was that while we are thrilled when we guess correctly, we do not put any importance on the number of incorrect guesses (or times when we do not guess). The odds of getting it right are not very good, and will negate any theory of intuition/premonition etc.

I’ve been here before (thought): This was explained by an interruption in our thought process. When we see something, it goes through a sequence of processes before it registers at a conscious level. An interruption can change part of the process such that it is registered at a conscious level just before the original “image” is processed. i.e. you already knew about it so when the image of it finally caught up, it was now already familiar to you!

Having said all that, that information was a very long time ago so I may be recalling it inaccurately, but I think the general ideas are still sound!
