Weekend Writing Prompt #43: Heartbeat

Thanks Sammi:

Prose Challenge –
In less than 175 words, write a story that uses the sound of a beating heart for dramatic effect.

Word Prompt

The silence screamed for a voice.
Footsteps falter, tears threaten.
Lights low, shapes unfamiliar.
A steady rhythm, trance-like in its refrain.
No variance, the ticking of time.
A second, a moment, a minute, an hour, a day.
All separate, but part of the whole.
Part of him.
Coats and uniforms bustling in their duty.
Checking, tweaking, replacing, squeezing.
Wires and drips, needles and blood, cuffs and tubes.
The rhythm: constant, hypnotic.
Depicting life.
And love.
Not wanting, but knowing the inevitable.
For it to stop.
Seconds, moments, minutes.
Then it does.

Poetry Challenge –
Write a 13 line poem that is inspired by matters of the heart.

Photo Prompt

I show the world my heart,
Fresh as Summer grass,
Wide as a sunny smile.
Who notices me?
People pass me by,
Heads looking ahead
Eyes see, but they don’t see me,
I am here, but not considered worthy.
Embracing each new day,
I live and flourish for a time.
Just like this leaf perhaps,
Plain, wavering in the wind,
But a heart nonetheless.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have recently lost our beloved dog Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney, and now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of my GSD so had hers done too. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

Flourishing I hope Di lasts for some time, though as I get older it’s becoming more and more of a challenge.

Two “heartfelt” responses. Loved them both
