Word Prompt  Revelation

Prose Challenge – In 250 words or less, write a story about the uncovering of a secret.

‘Yes Izzy?’
‘Do I have a birth certificate?’
‘Of course sweetheart. Everyone does.’
Beth continued her chore of ironing, something she hated.
‘Can I see it?
‘Whatever for?’
‘I want to see if I’m adopted.’
Beth froze, nearly scorching Izzy’s school uniform.
Stalling for time to get her thoughts together she said
‘Why sweetie?’
‘Teacher said it was part of our assignment for the holidays’.
Putting aside the iron, Beth sat down next to her daughter, giving her her undivided attention.
‘No, Izzy. You are not adopted. You are our precious baby. Daddy and I love you very much and nothing will change that.’
‘Can I see it then? My birth certificate?’
‘Yes, but can we wait until Daddy gets home please?’
‘Because it’s to do with family, and we always do family things together.’
Izzy sighed, but seemed content to leave it at that for the time being.

Brian found Beth in the kitchen when he got in from work and could see something was bothering her. Beth told him.
‘Ah,’ he said.
‘Questions are bound to be asked Brian. How do we explain to a nine year old that I was only fourteen when she was born and that we couldn’t marry until I was twenty one?’
He held her close. Damn teachers.

217 words.

Photo Prompt

Poetry Challenge – Taking inspiration from both the word prompt and the photo, write an ABC / Alphabet poem – where the first letter of each line is the next letter in the alphabet (the first line begins with “A”, the second “B”, the third “C” and so on).  It is up to you how many lines you write.

A flickering flame
Belies the significance of this single
Dreamlike it
Graceful, ever
In the breeze,
Joyous as it
Kisses the
Memories linger,
Nothing deters it from
Opening the doors of darkness,
Protector to all who enter.
Query not its purpose,
Resplendent in its glory
Silhouetted against the
Tranquility of Love Eternal.
United, no longer alone this
Vision of warmth
Weighs gladly across my heart
X-halted am I to have known
You, be part of you, and to carry your
Zest for life forward.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

Very powerful Di, I wonder how they revealed it to her…

    • I worked with a girl who became a Mum at 14. She celebrated her 21st and mentioned her daughter was 7. She looked my colleagues in the eye and said,’Yeah? So what?’ when they expressed their shock. Her daughter was a credit to her, and an example to one woman whose 8 year old was a conceited and selfish prima donna.
