Anyone who knows me will know I’m a dog person. I had a cat and a budgie when I was a child, but breed, size, age, doesn’t matter, I see a dog and I home in for a fuss, sometimes under the slightly peeved eye of her ladyship who I have to console afterwards and tell her I love her best.
Pets, whatever we have, are part of the family. They warm our hearts, snuggle close, get us all gooey eyed, then chew our shoes or pee on the floor.

Maggie is getting on now as she’ll be 13 next month, but we remember her as a tiny puppy of seven weeks when we brought her home. It was Friday 11th March 2005.
We took her to the vet the following day for a check up and her first jabs, having no name for her when we went in, but by the time we got back to the car, she’d chosen one for herself. She was a people magnet, everyone wanted to fuss her as she snuggled into Hubby’s coat and she loved all the attention. Magnet became Maggie, and that was that.

We have been blessed that she has never been a chewer or pinched anything off the table. She will gum her ‘babies’ (aka toys) and tuck them beneath her at night.
I remember we had a protest ‘accident’ indoors which was hilariously funny:
As is my method of house training, pup is taken out into the garden every 25 -30 minutes or so for wees, and when they perform, praise and treats (later mainly praise), but if they don’t, that’s fine, they get another shot in half an hour.
This particular day I’d taken her out for the business and she did nothing. However, she came inside, looked Hubby straight in the eye and squatted her bot in front of the radiator.
I tapped her on the bum with the paper and she stopped in mid stream as I scooped her up and put her back outside, where she finished what she’d started.
At night, she was put in a cage and we would get up around 2am to let her out for a wee, then go back to bed and she’d be fine until about 7.30. It was never used for punishment I might add and was always left open during the day, but at night or if we went out and had to leave her behind, she was put inside but it didn’t bother her as it was her ‘safe place’.

These days we have a set routine, but if she gets us up in the night it is usually around 2am. I wonder sometimes if she’s getting her own back on us disturbing her all those years ago, but then she does the business and is praised for it, albeit sleepily, and I’d rather that than have an accident, especially as she hates to be dirty or poorly indoors.
She’s fast asleep on her cushion at the moment.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have an elderly dog called Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

  1. Love the sweater. Tide has a red sweater, He’s like “get a load of me” in it.

  2. I love the story of how Maggie got her name – I had just assumed it was because you liked the name, I never realized there was such a nice story behind it.

Maggie sounds like a wonderful companion! Stuff is already sleeping through the night and racing around with the pack!

    • Merry Christmas Frank.
Maggie is indeed good company (though she can have her moments of being an absolute pain!) and when I was working she was a great stress reliever. She’s curled up with her new baby at the moment.
