They were safe for now.
From Rodney’s vantage point, he had a good view of the road and the buildings opposite.
Tonight he and his new team would forage and bring back to base whatever food and provisions they could find to rebuild their colony which had been washed away by the floods.
The thrum in the distance didn’t worry them to begin with, but as it gradually increased in volume, the latest recruits started to panic.
They hadn’t signed on for this, and one by one shot out of the storm drain to be swept up into the Belly of the Beast.
Rodney sighed, longing for the confines of his cage when he had once been a pet.
Losing his comrades to the rain was bad enough, but how was he going to explain losing their replacements to a council roadsweeper?

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes!
In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too.
On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts.
From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives.
We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.
What a tragic little tale.
It made me smile.
Rats! Sorry, I had to include that exclamation, although “Humans!” would be more appropriate. What a clever story, taking the reader (this one anyway) from an assumption that this was in the sci-fi genre to the realisation that it was about something right under our feet.
Ha! Rats indeed. Thanks for the comment!
You’re welcome.
Rodney the rat is having a tough time!
Ah, so you saw Flushed Away too!
My niece and nephew made me sit through it a lot a couple of years ago – and I have to say it is quite enjoyable 🙂
I loved those slugs!
It’s a rat’s life! Excellent.

Its hard being a leader. Rodney will just have to start over again. Delightful tale.
Thanks for your comment Susan. 🙂
Hey at least in the sewers Rodney can run all day. Though it must’ve been tough to transition from a warm, dry cage. Brilliant concept on this story.
Thank you!
Rats. Why did it have to be rats. Oy.
When I first started readig this, I thought it was ants. Until he mentioned being a pet lol. Not many people have ants as a pet. Good story. I like it. Poor Rodney.
Rodney was a pet rat in Flushed Away voiced by Hugh Jackman.
Ahh I see 🙂
Rats, I guess? Great take on the prompt.
Yep. Rodney was a pet rat in Flushed Away.
