The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS Nov. 4/17

Here’s Linda’s challenge:
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “shortcut/cut short.” Use one, use both, whatever strikes your fancy. Enjoy!

In my working life, people were always trying to find short cuts for doing the job, not realising that things were done a specific way for a reason.
As a financial analyst, I was shown the job and did it in the Monkey see Monkey do fashion for months. When I understood what I was doing (and why), I checked with my supervisor if I could experiment with my files linking a summary sheet to the actual grids for input into That Big Computer in the Sky. I opened a Work in Progress file and played, running the two parallel until I knew it worked.

After I’d left another company, my replacement decided to change the layout of a spreadsheet and in so doing messed up the accountant’s own as he had linkages to it which were all lost with her modifications.
Her job with the company was cut short……… to about a week I think.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! Due to a nightmare of a house sale in 2014, 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat until April 2017. We made strong friendships both on and off the water, and enjoyed swan and duck families for neighbours. Sadly times change and we now reside in a small bungalow a short distance from the beach on the Lincolnshire coast.

  1. J-Dub says:

That happens at my place all the time. You are so right. Learn the rules first and understand the whys before experimenting. Then innovate. The basics are sometimes lacking. One has to crawl before they can walk and walk before they run.
