With the recent hype about a female iconic Doctor, this is just so apt!

Welcome to The Tardis: Time And Relative Dimension In Space, one of the most popular TV Sci-Fi series ever. Not that I was ever a true fan, but I knew one and could only describe him as obsessed!

Imagine entering a small box such as this to find an expanse of space so vast, it could take forever to explore.
Then turn it round.
What if you were used to living in such a machine with infinite room, and then one step outside and you were confined, restricted, and cramped.

This is how we felt when we first bought the boat, having moved from three bedrooms, 2 receptions, plus conservatory (and a kitchen and bathroom of course) to a home measuring just 41 feet by 6’10”. You could lose 10′ of living space due to the helm and bow areas, which was one of the reasons we had the covers fitted, to give us a Mud Room to remove our coats and shoes in bad weather, and a Conservatory to grow our tomatoes (which didn’t work, we had 2).
We may have downsized from a TARDIS to a thimble in 2014, but we grew to love it.
Now we’re going back in.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and have a terrible sweet tooth. Best friends are Hubby, our dog Maggie, Bro in NZ, MSM and MOH (and his dog). I am also a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! Due to a nightmare of a house sale in 2014, 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat until April 2017. We made strong friendships both on and off the water, and enjoyed swan and duck families for neighbours. Sadly times change and we were once again house hunting until September. We now reside in a small bungalow a short distance from the beach on the Lincolnshire coast.

  1. That’s a great analogy. Good story.

  2. Good to actually find someone else who’s not a fan of the Doctor! I am thinking of moving to a narrow boat myself – not that my present tiny flat is any larger! Happy house hunting’

    Who’s there? My short story

    • It’s a totally different way of life. We talked to several people before taking the plunge, and it was a bit of a culture shock, but we loved it. We’d never even had a canal boat holiday so talk about jumping in the deep end!

  3. I think I would be quite happy with a thimble!

  4. I like the comparison. Good story!

  5. In Mumbai due to high real estate prices and lack of space(Mumbai being an island) the apartments are cubicle sized. But people continue to love their homes.

  6. Jelli says:

Downsizing the living space is always difficult. Enjoyed the perspective on this one. 🙂 ❤
