We’ve been foraging!
Not that it was our intention, but walking up to the supermarket today to give Maggie her second walk, exercise ourselves, and oh yeah, do some shopping for our trip tomorrow, we passed a mass of blackberry brambles overhanging the path.
They were groaning with fruit, and we remembered that last year we had left it too late to gather and either someone else had stripped the lot or there were some very fat blackbirds!
I only wanted some bread rolls really, but this was too good an opportunity to miss and so I bought a couple of bramley cooking apples as well.
Oh, how I miss our tree from the cottage!
The largest on sale were on a par with the smallest from our tree, and the cost……….. bloody hell. Two apples cost me almost thirty bob (£1.42) !

So today, I am cooking sweet and sour chicken so that MSM can have some, and a traditional blackberry and apple crumble for dessert.
We’d picked so many berries, I’ve frozen the rest down, and as I only used one apple, will be repeating the process in the not too distant future so that the second isn’t wasted!
So many things we are looking forward to doing when we find a suitable property, like growing our own veg and freezing down the surplus, shopping in bulk and freezing down in meal-size portions, foraging like today and enjoying the fresh fruit of the country. Not to mention of course saving a few quid in the process!
