Sunday Strange microfiction challenge

This painting is by Gabriel von Max

Thanks Jane . Definitely an interesting one.

Come out of the shadows:
You need the light more than I,
Blind as I am I can see you lurking,
Take the lamp if you dare
And see what I see.

Betrayal on the wind of change,
Something different and not understood,
These stone steps lead to my destiny,
Yet you will not come forth
To show me the way.

Are you afraid of the dark?
Or the horrors you imagine there,
Each lamp is a test for those who hide behind you,
Only four left,
This one is for you.

The branches at my feet lay beaten
Having drawn blood against my back
But I did not cry out.
Not for me to release the spirits
Entrusted within my soul.

But you and your followers tortured me,
So here I sit, with my lanterns aglow.
You are all doomed in this place,
Whilst I, like the flame,
Will rise to freedom, leaving you in the dark.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and have a terrible sweet tooth. Best friends are Hubby, our dog Maggie, Bro in NZ, MSM and MOH (and his dog). I am also a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! Due to a nightmare of a house sale in 2014, 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat until April 2017. We made strong friendships both on and off the water, and enjoyed swan and duck families for neighbours. Sadly times change and we were once again house hunting until September. We now reside in a small bungalow a short distance from the beach on the Lincolnshire coast.
