Neither Mother or Father were impressed.
They saw it as a flagrant display of disrespect and vanity.
‘Just because you can doesn’t mean you have to!’ Mother admonished her offspring.
‘We are leaders, not exhibitionists,’ Father added. ‘It is our duty as Guiding Lights to be uniform in tone and contrast. It confuses people otherwise. They don’t know how to react.’
‘But I’m so pretty!’ the child whined. ‘Why can’t I show my full potential?’
‘Show off you mean!’ said her sister.
‘Shut up! You’re only jealous.’
‘No, I’m not. I can do it too, I’m just not so flashy.’
‘Poppycock! Call that colour? It’s a pathetic pink tinge. Not a patch on my vibrant blue.’
‘And don’t you try it either!’ shouted their mother, nodding at the smallest lantern in the corner attempting to glow.
