The amethyst sky pinkened to gold and all sense of time was lost.
Unsure if it was a morning dawn or evening sunset, they plodded on.
The ice cracked beneath their feet, crunching in the eerie silence.
Undeterred, they continued on their way, this pathway an established route to the promise of warmth and shelter.
Food was in short supply, but just occasionally a morsel would be found trapped in the icicles, which also provided water for those with strength enough to drink.
Their body fat reserves depleted, it was unlikely the younger ones would survive.
The seasons had taken their toll, confused climates and conditions had thrown their body clocks out, and now it was probably too late.
Such was the cruelty of Nature and the curse of Man’s greed and destruction.
This small colony of hedgehogs should be hibernating now.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and have a terrible sweet tooth for jelly babies or fruit pastilles. Best friends are Hubby, our dog Maggie, Bro in NZ, MSM and MOH (and his dog). I am also a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! Due to a nightmare of a house sale in 2014, 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat until April 2017. We made strong friendships both on and off the water, and enjoyed swan and duck families for neighbours. Sadly times change and we were once again house hunting until September. We now reside in a small bungalow a short distance from the beach on the Lincolnshire coast.

    Very beautifully penned!

  3. ellenbest24 says:

The current hedgehog problem in the uk is highlighted in your response to the prompt, well done on both the theme and the response. 😇

  4. Michael says:

Delightful descriptions Di, I noted the obvious passion you feel for these creatures…well done…

  5. Brilliant and timely story. The last line should be amusing but it’s tragic.

  6. I thought the tale would end about polar bears — they are starving to death in the Artic due to climate change. From tiny hedgehogs to mighty polar bears, man has managed to mess things up so badly.
    Well penned story.

  7. Sue Vincent says:

    Beautiful, but very sad.
My apologies for not being around to reblog. When I get chance to catch up, you’ll see why…
