Following on from my post yesterday on shopping price hikes.
There will be two women going home today looking at a certain thing in their shopping carts somewhat differently.
I’m talking about toilet rolls.
Yes, I know I’ve mentioned this before, but that was some time ago and things have moved on a bit since then.
These days we don’t buy the giant packs of 12 or 18 as we have nowhere to store the surplus, but then we don’t use so much anyway. No, not an economy drive, but with the shower block here on the marina, we use their facilities a fair bit.
One shopper was looking bemused as she couldn’t find the brand she’d been buying, and as Hubby and I discussed puppies on rolls of yesteryear, we heard this giggling alongside us. Well, the conversation sort of escalated.
It would appear this lady hadn’t realised she was getting short-changed in the tissue department, and so started an in-depth scrutiny of all things roll shaped on the shelf.
Now when I did my personal survey some years back, puppies on a roll had 210 sheets per roll, whereas the standard flat design had 240. This was already a reduction from the 280 before puppies came on the scene.
Today, the cute one had 190 sheets per roll compared to the standard roll with 221, both retailing at £1.97 for a four pack, so I suppose it all depends whether you want to use it, stroke it, or just impress your friends should they visit your smallest room.
Enter our second shopper, who had already made her selection and was intrigued by our conversation.
She joined in and told us how shocked her son had been at the price of toilet paper when he left home. She had purchased the store’s own, but not their economy range as that was ‘too hard and had pretty useless absorption qualities’.
Taking a look at her choice, I picked a similar pack off the shelf and noted it had 220 sheets per roll at a price of £1.75 for four. That meant we were paying an extra 22p for just four extra sheets in total.
Hm.
Our first lady was still walking up and down the shelf checking out ALL of the four packs for the best deal, and settled with the store’s own as had our second shopper.
We decided to follow suit. After all, it’s not as if we have a cess pit to worry about now so provided it does the job and is gentle on our important little places, we’ll stick with it.
As the first walked away to continue her shopping with a big smile on her face, our second lady asked if we had a dishwasher. I pointed to Hubby and laughed. Apparently there was a good deal on rubber gloves this week.
Hey ……… the mentioned the Quantity of sheets changing, but have you noticed that the sheet sizes change also. i.e. there may be more sheets on a roll, but they’ve reduced the size of the sheets! Also watch for unannounced ply number changes. It is a bum wrap trying to outsmart these companies!
LOL. I found this with kitchen roll as the new ones were shorter than my holder! Next they’ll be going by dry weight! 😀
Wow, that’s a lot of research! 😀
Always worth comparing prices, and fun to get a discussion group going in the middle of the store! 🙂
It broke the monotony anyway!
haha 🙂

I love having interesting conversations while shopping. I pretty much stick to the same brand as always, and have never really compared prices and amounts included against another one. Probably pays off to do that, though.
Oh, puppies on TP! I never have seen that before. I’ve seen flowers imprinted, though. Way back when we could get it in different colors, not just white. Wish they did that still, but would probably cost a lot more. 🙂
It’s Andrex and they are embossed so make up more fatness for less paper!
