Give and take………… and take

Listening to the news programme on the radio today, the subject of the National Living Wage was being discussed. I voiced my opinion on this here.

tiered wages

Already, in the Pub industry, it is being said that employers are reducing their staff numbers or their working hours to compensate for this rise in the hourly rate.  (source)

Those with small businesses cannot afford to pay three staff the National Living Wage, and so reduce their staff to two.

One guy said it would be the first pay rise he’d had in four years, and another was up in arms as he had worked hard for ten years to earn a decent living, and now anyone over 25 will be earning just 30p an hour less than him.

A supervisor was rightly concerned that despite her responsibilities and superior position within the company, the lower ranked staff were to be paid just pence less than she was.

One caller was saying that it made financial sense for people to hire someone under 21 and train them rather than employ someone with experience and pay them the higher amount.
Of course the knock on effect will be a reduction in the number of our young people out of work (which is a good thing), but over 25? Those figures are more than likely to rise.

It was also being said that many families are going to be worse off with the introduction of the National Living Wage as they will lose their tax credits.
Whoa!
Let’s go back to October and wasn’t it decided that gem of bastardism daylight robbery from our hard working lower paid was to be delayed?

There’s a surprise:  The Government has moved the goalposts again.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

the government should not be in the business of mandating wages, they can never get it right, they always screw things up. They find a problem (usually created by them in the 1st place) to fix, they do their thing, then later they have to come and fix the problem with even more government mandates. The solution is to get them totally out of it! The free market actually does work, IF it’s allowed to. Hasn’t been allowed to in the USA for at least a century and look where we are because of that! We are also in the process of raising our minimum wages (now $7.25 I think), some states are raising it to $15! Of course they are losing jobs right and left. Not good at all for all those people who never get a chance now to start at the bottom, they have all been permanently locked out of the job market.
