First day of the month, and thus we say goodbye to January.
First thing Hubby and I say to each other on the first of a new month is ‘White Bunnies’.
I always thought that by saying that, nobody would be allowed to punch me hard on the arm chanting
‘Pinch punch, first day of the month, and no returns!’
If there was an award for bruising, I’d win it hands down.
But actually looking it up on WIKI, it’s a superstition which states that should someone say this out loud immediately upon waking on the first of the new month, they will have good luck for the duration of it.
Also, some people believe by saying it they will receive a present by the end of the month (well they’d be right if their birthday fell in that particular month).
There are several variants including saying it up the chimney, saying Rabbit or Rabbits three times, or just as we do White Rabbits/Bunnies, but it’s not known when or where this superstition originated.
In folklore, it was believed that rabbits and hares were lucky, hence the practice of carrying a rabbit’s foot (not so lucky for the rabbit though).
However, in the 19th century, fishermen wouldn’t mention the word ‘rabbit’ whilst at sea, and in Devon if a white rabbit was seen in the village when someone was ill, it was believed the person would surely die.
Years ago, I had a book on the Chinese Zodiac. I found it fascinating in its analysis of all years, signs and combinations, compatibility and opposites. As was often the case, I loaned it to someone and never got it back.
The next Chinese Year of the Rabbit is 2023, running from January 22nd 2023 to February 9th 2024.
2015 is the Year of the Goat/Ram/Sheep according to Chinese zodiac.
The Year of the Goat is from Feb. 19, 2015 (the Lunar New Year / Spring Festival of China) until Feb. 7, 2016.
