The Dogs Meeting

I was reading a post by rachelmankowitz (she has the cutest little furballs called Cricket and Butterfly) in my reader this morning about dog tails.
It reminded me of a poem I learned as my party piece for my brother’s wedding in 1965.
I chickened out and played the piano instead (The Carnival is Over so not exactly apt for the occasion!) and earned myself the princely sum of five bob.

I have no idea who wrote it (I thought it might have been one of Dad’s actually) so please forgive me for not giving credit to the author. No copyright infringement is intended.

Ahem:

The dogs once held a meeting,
They came from near and far,
Some came by automobile,
And some came by car.
But each one as he entered,
Before around he looked,
Had to take his tail off
And hang it on a hook.
Now when the meeting started
With each mother, son and sire,
A dirty little yellow dog
Jumped up and hollered ‘FIRE’!
They all jumped up in panic
And had no time to look,
So each one grabbed at random
A tail from off a hook.
They got their tails all well mixed up,
Which made them very sore,
To have to have to wear a tail
They’d never worn before.
That’s the reason you will see
When walking down a street,
A dog will stop to smell the tail
Of every dog he meets.
That’s the reason you will find
A dog will leave a bone,
To go and smell another tail,
He wants to find his own.

Thank you Rachel for today’s inspiration.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have an elderly dog called Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.
