An educational moment……

I thought I’d been dreaming when twenty something years ago somebody on the radio said it was National Doughnut Day. To me any Friday when you have to work in an office was doughnut day, and we just took turns as to who was going to buy them. This is not so, as sure enough, National Doughnut Day is celebrated on the first Friday of June every year, succeeding the Doughnut Day event created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the men and women who served doughnuts to soldiers during the first World War (source WIKI) .doughnutsSo today, when I heard another ‘odd’ announcement, I looked it up.

National Hug Day or National Hugging Day is an annual holiday occurring on January 21. The holiday was founded on January 21, 1986 in Caro, Michigan, and has since spread to Canada, England, Australia, Germany and Poland. (source: cute-calendar) .

So, there you have it, it’s true. Today is National Hugging Day, though as to it ever becoming a public holiday, I very much doubt it.

Somehow I don’t think I’ll be going round hugging complete strangers, but my Huggy, I mean Hubby, was well chuffed when I gave him a cuddle in the kitchen this morning. I’ve said before that we’re not huggy people (see Maggie’s birthday post) though we do have our moments, but it was nice to hold and be held for no reason other than we wanted to.     I must admit that Hubby is a hugger really though, so he didn’t want to let go for a while, and said ‘I’m busy’ when I tried to move away.

My sister in law sent us an e-card once, and for all those ‘keep fitters’ out there, try this.

Stand with your feet slightly apart.

Raise your right arm to 90 degrees in front of you, then tuck it under your left armpit as far to your elbow as you can.

Do the same with your other arm, tucking it under your right armpit.

Now rub your arms up and down, and rock or twist yourself side to side. (You can jump a couple of times too if you want).

This is the DIY hug.  So even if you’re alone, you can have one.

Go on try it. Snuggle up to the one you love, or someone close, or even a stranger if you’re feeling brave and they look like they need one (just hope you don’t get walloped, it kind of spoils the moment!)

hugThere. Now, doesn’t that feel better?

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.
