“HEY! Featherbrain! You got a problem there?”
“I’m not sure. The damn things won’t come out.”
“Here, let me see.”
“Hi Guys. You heard about the party next weekend?”
“No. What’s all that about then?”
“It’s grrrrrreat. Happens every January. Loads of grub, plenty of variety. Everyone’s going.”
“How do you know about it?”
“I was just passing by and saw all this activity, so thought I’d check it out. Been every year since.”
“Yeah, he’s right. It’s some kind of census I think. You get to see loads of old friends and have a chance at making new ones. Can you help us out here?”
“Not to mention who’s had kids or changed partners. It’s a good time to catch up.”
“Damn, I still can’t get these things out. Do you think it’s a trap or some kind of joke?”
“Where are we? ” (Looks around) “No, not here. You’re always safe here. The owners are pretty terrific and always make sure there’s plenty of food and water.”
“Why can’t I get these out then?”
“Let me have a look. Aha, I see the problem. The holes aren’t big enough. You’ll just have to make do with the little things. They come out easy enough. And there’s plenty of other stuff over there.”
“Yeah, I know, but I like these. There are soooo many and I’m hungry!”
“Of course there are silly! If you can’t get them out, how is someone else going to? Bye for now, Must fly. See you at the weekend maybe?”
“You know, I’ve just noticed. These things are in the other feeders too. I wonder what’s going on?”
“Dunno, but I’m giving up. You coming?”
TWO DAYS LATER
“Hey! Finchie! How ya doin’ ?”
“Great thanks! You’re looking good. You put on weight?”
“Yeah, I know. I came back yesterday and they’d had a change around. The sunflower seeds are in a different place, one with BIGGER holes, and come out with hardly any effort. I’ve been making the most of it.”
“That’s brilliant. You going at the weekend?”
“You bet. I’ve been chatting to some other guys here and they’ve all mentioned it. Got a date with a cute little chick with a yellow haircut. See young Robin over there? He tried to put me off by twittering on about territorial rights and stuff, but Goldie and the gang said not to worry about it. It’s a two day event, and he can’t hold everyone off all of the time!”
